On the east cape of the island of Hvar is located the fishing village Sućuraj. The history of Sućuraj, which is longer then 2300 years, was created along with Croats by many other nations who once ruled this territory leaving their marks in architecture and culture alike. Sućuraj has been demolished and rebuilt again and again throughout history; the oldest building is the Franciscan monastery (once Augustan). The cute inter-connecting in building stone houses with closed streets indicate a specific style of construction conditioned by the constant danger of pirates from the river Neretva. Today’s parish church of St. George by whom the village got its name was built at the end of the 19th century. Interesting is also the baroque church of St. Antony from 1663 as well as the Venetian fort from 1613. Sućuraj can be reached by the road from Hvar or direct connection by land via the harbour of Drvenik.
